American Idol (ABC)

We have to start with the most obvious one. American Idol should not have been rebooted in the first place, and we all know it.

Despite a handful of new singing competitions in the last year (like The Launch and The Four), singing competitions kind of lost their impact after years of American Idol and The Voice winners who never amounted to very much. Despite the fact that Idol was deservedly cancelled in 2015, it was huge news in 2017 when it was announced that — surprise! — the show would be returning on ABC.

The new iteration of the singing competition features judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, and Ryan Seacrest, the true star of the original series, is back as host. Right away, there were problems. Perry was the first judge to sign on, and was offered a huuuge salary to do so. But then they struggled to find other artists interested in the job.

Once the show started, audiences weren’t immediately won over. Some people have complained about the lack of harsh critiques, something that made the original show such a hit. Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson didn’t let people off so easily. The new Idol seemed to be a softer, nicer competition, and who wants that?

Many viewers also complained about the chemistry between the judges. Nothing could ever replicate the chemistry of the original trio, but the show has had some great judging panels over the years. Apparently, Perry, Bryan and Richie aren’t one of them.

Ratings really struggled at first as it competed with NBC’s The Voice, but viewership has been up. American Idol was picked up for a 17th season at ABC, and we have no idea why. Hopefully the next season is an even bigger flop, and they pull the plug once and for all.
