Heathers (Paramount)

It’s one thing when TV networks decide to reboot classic TV shows, but can they please stay away from beloved cult classics? Please?

Heathers is a well-loved dark teen comedy about a girl named Veronica (played by a young Winona Ryder) who hangs out with the cool girls in school, the Heathers. She secretly hates them, and when she falls for the mysterious new boy J.D., they not-so-accidentally kill the Head Heather and make it look like a suicide, which sends the school into a suicide frenzy.

The Heathers TV show has been in the works since 2009. Different versions have been shopped around, originally heading for Fox, then another remake that was more like a sequel was set to air on Bravo, but wasn’t picked up, and was then supposed to air on TV Land.

Finally, the show found its home on the Paramount Network. The show was supposed to premiere in March 2018, but due to the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, the network thought it would be best to postpone that premiere (considering the dark subject matter, which includes gun violence). The show is now set for a July 10 premiere.

As if all the setbacks weren’t bad enough, they also changed a lot of details from the original movie. It seems almost like they were desperate to make the show inclusive and modern, so much so that it doesn’t seem natural or sincere. The Head Heather, Heather Chandler, is an alternative, plus size girl. Heather Duke, or Heath Duke in this version, is a genderqueer teen, and Heather McNamara is a biracial lesbian. LGBTQ and racial representation are so important…when they don’t seem forced.

Maybe the network should just cut its losses and cancel the show before it even premieres. Fans of the 1988 black comedy were fuming when the teaser trailer was released, and needless to say, none of them will be watching. Will a new generation of teens accept the show, or should they just stick to watching the original movie? Probably the latter.
