Legion shows us that even heroes can be the villains

Legion is constantly confusing us and making us question everything we know. And this week’s episode is no different!

It might come from DC Comics, but the saying “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” rings true in this latest episode of Legion. While the show has more twists and turns than we know how to handle, this episode was dark and chaotic and showed the true duality of man.

Death can cause destruction. Not by the death itself but rather by those left behind. This idea was proven true when David goes on a warpath of sorts to avenge the death of his sister, Amy Haller.

One of the best lines comes from Farouk when David confronts him and tells Amahl Farouk that he is not like him because he doesn’t hide behind a mask. “Everyone hides behind a mask,” Farouk responds. While it sends a chill down your spine, he’s right.

Even David, who believes he is open and free with himself, is hiding. He’s constantly questioning himself and his purpose and doesn’t necessarily open up to those around him.

The episode focuses on the fact that David eventually leads to the destruction of mankind — the hero, essentially, becoming the villain. It isn’t exactly a new thing, especially in regards to comic book content. But it still hurts to watch our hero suddenly become the thing he fought against.

So while we all wear masks, protecting ourselves from the world we love and ourselves, Legion points out that not everyone is as cookie-cutter as we try to make it seem. Sometimes the villain ends up saving the world and even superheroes have to learn that they’re not perfect. (Not that David Haller didn’t know that in the first place.)
