Bohemian Rhapsody’s first trailer promises to rock us

If the idea of anyone trying to bring Freddie Mercury to life fills you with fear, then let the first trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody assuage some fears.

There’s really no mistaking a song from Queen when it comes on the radio. There’s just something different about the style — even before Freddie Mercury’s iconic vocals or Brian May’s Red Special start the real music. Fortunately, it seems that the promotional team for Bohemian Rhapsody (out this November) also understands that, starting not with an iconic song but rather with Mercury singing with fans until the famous beat of “Another One Bites the Dust” comes on in.

To be fair, a lot of “Bohemian Rhapsody” shows up in this trailer. Not only is it the name of the movie, but it’s also perhaps the most famous Queen song of them all. However, you can also catch snippets of “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You” and the aforementioned “Another One Bites the Dust.”

So, how’s Rami Malek as Mercury? Well, the trailer doesn’t appear to use his vocals at any point in time — it’s all original Queen. As a result, that remains a bit of a concern right now. But if you were worried that he couldn’t embody Mercury’s personality, then you should worry a little less. There’s plenty of snark in this trailer from Malek’s Mercury.

The aesthetic is pretty much spot on, too, with the long hair, including May’s curls having their proper life of their own. The costume references should delight Queen fans … as should the reference to the “operatic section.”

Somehow, a six-minute song with references to “the fandango” and the aforementioned “operatic section” turned into a legend.

It seems that the movie understands just how wild that all is, and it plans to give us everything it’s got to try and capture even a tiny bit of Queen’s magic.

Hopefully, they’ll put a few more iconic songs in there. Can we hope for someone to play David Bowie for “Under Pressure”?
