Will romance in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery make the game too much like SIMs?

SIMs has been the game to make friends, create a life, and find love. Is Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery turning into a version set in the wizarding world?

SIMs may be a popular game for many, but it doesn’t appeal to all. After all, isn’t it just living real life but in a fantasy world? Don’t you just get to meet your dream mate, get your dream job, and have the family that you imagine yourself having in some alternate timeline? When I first heard of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery developing romance in the future, I instantly thought about SIMs.

Right now, the Harry Potter game allows fans of the wizarding world to go to the school and go on quests and challenges. They get the chance to be a student before Harry was a student, facing many of the same creatures and putting up with the Slytherin bullies.

Now the game creators, Jam City, have confirmed that romance will be a thing in later updates. But doesn’t this make it just like the SIMs? This could turn into a search for the perfect wizard mate, focusing on building connections with certain characters in the game just because you think they are perfect for you. It could take the focus away from the actual challenges and the quests.

The game was already teetering on the edge. There’s the chance to create your own character, a little like you can choose to develop the character in SIMs. Then there’s the chance to choose your own house, in the way that SIMs allows you to choose the job you want to go into. And let’s not forget about easily working out which wand to grab by answering Ollivander’s question right, in a way that you can choose furniture and what to do in SIMs.

On top of that, there are the challenges, which are similar to some of the challenges set up in SIMs. In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the challenges help to build upon the levels and experience. When in SIMs, you can build up happiness points as your SIM ages by completing certain tasks, like getting the kids into private school or making lots of friends.

Adding a romance just continues the path to turn Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery into the SIMs. It’s a chance to find love, defining a person’s happiness based on the person they’re with.

Of course, this will depend on how the romance is developed into the story. It could just be a side plot, keeping the focus on the actual challenges in the games. There could even be two storylines for people to choose to focus on, a world of magical mystery and a world of magical love.
