Shadowhunters has a plot hole that REALLY needs fixing

Jace has been Lilith’s Owl for weeks on Shadowhunters. But for some reason, they still haven’t explained exactly how she got to him.

Jace’s secret is finally out on Shadowhunters, and now the race is on to save him. But Lilith is the Queen of Edom, the most powerful Greater Demon ever. Her Owl won’t be easily freed. But the show still hasn’t explained how she trapped him in the first place.

The first question Alec and Izzy had after finding out what Jace has been doing is why Lilith went after Jace. It wasn’t until Imogen returned that someone asked “how.”

To their credit, the writers’ room did cover their bases, albeit vaguely. During Clary’s conversation with Ethuriel, it was explained that being brought back from the dead made Jace vulnerable. Before he could give any more information — like the name of Jace’s master — Ethuriel was killed by Lilith herself.

So the question remains: how and when exactly did Lilith get to Jace?

Clearly, she maintains her hold by manipulating his “love” for her. When Lilith kisses Jace in “A Window Into An Empty Room,” she transfers some of her energy to keep him strong. In case you missed it, watch closely:

Before he drank Lilith/Magnus’ brew, Jace was deeply in love with Clary. He wouldn’t have cheated on her, so it’s hard to believe that a kiss was Lilith’s original method of possession. Unless maybe it was a sneak attack kiss.

It’s more likely that this all began at the end of season two. For those few minutes that Jace was dead, his soul was no longer his own, and Lilith could have swooped in while he was in limbo. Remember, in the final moments of the episode, he was really not okay.

Jace stumbled out of the bar and couldn’t right himself. He was terrified and weak. For some book fans, there was the hope that maybe Heavenly Fire was coming into play. Luckily, there’s still a possibility for that to happen — if Sebastian rises.

Right now, that’s been put on hold again. After attacking Simon, two of Lilith’s disciples were disintegrated, and Lilith has a bone to pick with the Seelie Queen. In the meantime, it looks like Jace manages to break free of Lilith’s hold next week.

Hopefully, he’ll bring some answers about his relationship with Lilith in his lucid state.
