Claws

As fun and summery as the show itself, the Claws soundtrack offers all sorts of catchy summer jams. Ranging from Barry White to a irresistible rendition of “Lady Marmalade” by the cast, the soundtrack is just good, (mostly) clean fun.

The TNT summer stunner is about a group of women working in a nail salon in Miami. The lead nail tech, Desna, played by the wonderful and formidable Niecy Nash, wants to build her own shop somebody, and tries to make extra money by mixing in with the local branch of the Dixie Mafia. The ladies vary from prudish to completely silent to loud and proud, but their diversity makes the show come alive. It’s breezy summer fare, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken seriously, and its music underscores that at every turn.

So much of the music pairs beautifully with their capers and antics, and some of the best moments happen when the ladies are alone in their shop, dancing with each other. The show is mostly about the relationships between the women, and their accompanying music offers a fun way to suss out the nuances of their relationship.

A favorite scene comes when Quiet Ann (so named because she never, ever speaks) pulls another lady from her sulk to dance to “Cafecito Cubano.” I dare you to listen to without moving your feet — or hips. It can’t be done.
