There are still people out there who haven’t read the Harry Potter novels. Others haven’t even seen the movies. If you’re one of them and worry you’ll struggle to follow Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, stop!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has made it to Broadway and is already garnering a lot of attention. The stars of the production, Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni, and Paul Thornley, appeared on TODAY to promote the show and had some good news for the 1% who haven’t read any of the Harry Potter books. You can still enjoy the Broadway production.

Despite the play being set 19 years after the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (well, before that time jump!), there’s no need to know what happens in the original stories. You don’t need to quickly find all seven books and read them or even need to watch all eight movies. The production works as a standalone story.

More from Harry Potter

Thornley, who plays Ron Weasley in the production, admitted that he hadn’t even realized the last book ended with that time jump to see adult Harry send Albus Severus Potter off to Hogwarts for the first time.

Dumezweni explained that being in a new form also helps to continue the story but bring in new fans at the same time. Of course, you’ll likely want to jump into the Harry Potter books as soon as you’ve seen the two-part play.

This isn’t just a story about Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley as adults. It’s not just a story about Albus Potter finding his way through Hogwarts as the son of the Boy Who Lived. This is a story about parents and children, of family together. It’s a story of adults finding their way in the world. The production works as a whole new story. While there will certainly be hidden gems for the Potterheads, it’s an enjoyable experience for all.
