Wonder Woman – Nearly caused a DCEU-MCU family feud

Speaking of comic books, we couldn’t leave out the woman who changed the game for superhero movies for years to come. Wonder Woman proved that a female-centric superhero movie could be profitable and that it was!

Wonder Woman tells the story of Diana, princess of the Amazons (Gal Gadot). When army pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes onto the secluded island of Themyscira, created by the Gods of Olympus, Diana learns of the World War taking place in the real world. She decides to leave the only life she’s ever known on the picturesque, all-female sanctuary and escort Trevor back to London to stop the war, which she believes is influenced by Ares, the God of War.

There is one costume detail in the film regarding the Amazons that may have been overlooked but is actually an interesting historical reference. Some of the Amazons seem to have a flesh-colored cloth over one side of their chest as if they’re missing a breast. In fact, Amazons are often depicted in art with one breast exposed. And some sources even state that Amazons would cut or burn off the breast on their dominant side so it wouldn’t get in the way during combat.

Some of those sources even argue that their name, Amazons, comes from the root of “a-mazos” which is Greek for “without breast.”

History aside, it’s always fun to look at who was almost cast in a film. In the case of Wonder Woman, two actors considered for the role of Steve Trevor were Liam Hemsworth and Alexander Skarsgård. What’s funny about that is the fact that they’re both connected to Marvel movies through their family (Wonder Woman is part of the DC extended universe).

Liam’s brother is Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, and Alexander’s father is Stellan Skarsgård, who is also part of the Thor universe as Dr. Erik Selvig.
