Deadpool – A character named after a dead childhood friend

Deadpool is everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed, fourth-wall-breaking superhero, and when we were finally treated to the long-awaited Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds, it was bound to be a huge hit.

Despite Deadpool being a huge success at the box office, among critics, and with fans of the original comic, it was a long, bumpy road to finally get the film out. It was in production for years, and even when it was finally moving forward, the studio still wasn’t sure it would be successful.

Several times in the movie, Deadpool jokes about the studio not having enough money to pay for certain elements in the movie, such as incorporating different X-Men characters. In real life, this was actually the case. Fox Studios cut the film’s budget by seven million dollars last minute, which left the filmmakers scrambling to rewrite portions of the screenplay to make them more budget-friendly.

Unfortunately, that meant many scenes were cut or shortened, including a motorcycle chase between Wade and Francis, and more villains that were set to appear. Thankfully, the film was a hit even with the cuts.

Deadpool is also filled with fun Easter eggs and pop culture references, a necessity for the hilarious comic book character’s big-screen debut. At one point in the movie, Wade is given a business card by The Recruiter. The number on this card reads 555-0199, and that phone number is the same phone number used for Lester’s business in the movie American Beauty. Throughout the movie, Wade makes constant references to the Recruiter being a pedophile, and in American Beauty, Lester seduces his teenage daughter’s friend.

One heartfelt Easter egg included in the movie by Ryan Reynolds is the name of the taxi driver, Dopinder. Reynolds revealed that he had a friend in elementary school who was a “really cool guy” named Dopinder. He died after getting struck by lightning, so he included this character as a tribute to him.
