Cathy Yan to direct Harley Quinn Birds of Prey spinoff movie
Suicide Squad may have received mixed reviews from fans and critics, but everyone agreed Harley Quinn was a strong point. Now DC is giving fans even more Harley.
Looks like we’re finally getting the Harley Quinn movie we deserve! It was announced earlier today that Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct the Harley Quinn spinoff movie, starring Suicide Squad‘s Margot Robbie.
The girl gang film will be based on the DC comic book series Birds of Prey. The series features Harley teaming up with several other crime fighters in the DC universe, including Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress. Christina Hodson, recently hired to write the upcoming Batgirl project, has penned the script.
This news makes Yan only the second woman to direct a DC superhero movie, after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins. She’s also the first Asian woman to do so. With the hype around Wonder Woman‘s success as well as Harley’s widespread fan appeal, there’s a lot of pressure on Yan to deliver a box office smash.
This will be Yan’s first major film project. Her feature debut, Dead Pigs, was a small-budget indie film that won critical acclaim at the Sundance film festival last January. Even with her inexperience on big-budget films, Yan’s presentation for Birds of Prey was apparently “exceptional,” and Robbie insisted the film be directed by a woman.
Production on the unnamed Harley Quinn project is expected to begin towards the end of the year. This won’t be Harley’s only upcoming appearance on the big screen. The Suicide Squad sequel is also expected to begin production in 2018, directed by Gavin O’Connor.

Two other rumored Harley Quinn projects are still in the early stages. Harley Quinn Vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens (with Suicide Squad director David Ayer) are seemingly on the back burner until further notice.
