Wallace Wells (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World)

Wallace is an unapologetic sidekick, and we love everything he chooses to be. The roommate to Scott Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Wallace is gay and proud, and nobody around him bats an eye about it.

Scott and Wallace are best friends, and they even share a bed in their tiny apartment. Even when Wallace has guys over, which is often, all three of them will sleep together. Creepy, but at least it shows how open-minded Scott is about his best friend’s sexuality! But of course, Wallace lives to keep Scott humble, which includes gossiping about him to Scott’s younger sister, Stacey.

The way Scott Pilgrim vs. The World deals with Wallace’s sexuality is pretty perfect. It’s never a big deal, and even when they meet new people, they don’t care either. Wallace doesn’t have the biggest role in the film, but he still leaves an impact.

At one point, he manages to steal away Stacey’s boyfriend, even though he was denying being gay all night. And all Stacey says is “Wallace?! Again?!” Even when he’s stealing boyfriends, nobody cares! That’s just Wallace being Wallace.

It’s not shocking that the filmmakers were pretty open about Wallace’s sexuality, though. Ramona Flowers, Scott’s Manic Pixie Dream Girl, has seven evil exes that Scott has to defeat before dating her. Notice how it’s “evil exes” and not “evil ex-boyfriends” because one of the exes is a woman.

No big deal! Why can’t all movies have funny, unapologetic gay side characters like Wallace?
