It’s a hard thing to do but Supernatural’s Arthur Ketch has done it. He is just like Harry Potter’s Professor Snape.

Before I dive into the reason behind this very bold statement let me quickly point out a few things. This is not that David Haydn Jones (Arthur Ketch) is a double of Alan Rickman (Severus Snape). No one can mimic, replace, or be Alan Rickman’s Snape. This is a comparison of how Snape the character and Ketch are very similar in they are viewed by both fandoms of Harry Potter and Supernatural.

More from Harry Potter

So here we go. Ketch was first introduced into Supernatural in season 12 and has made a significant impact on the show. Part of The Men of Letters he has gone about doing his duty no matter the consequences. Basically, he has made zero friends throughout his time on the show. He was, key word being “was,” killed off at the end of the series but in true Supernatural style dead doesn’t mean dead and he returned in season 13.

His character hasn’t gotten anymore lovable since his return. Still playing for the wrong side he is still causing problems for Team Free Will 2.0. It does, however, look as though he may be beginning a possible redemption arch. We need to see how that goes. There is always the chance that he flip everything around and be super evil. A bit of a double agent if you will.

But that is not how he is similar to Snape in Harry Potter. The character does some have similar traits. The double agent, unsure who he is working for the style; the constant dressing in black; frequently being right and one step of the enemy etc.

So how is Ketch the Supernatural Severus Snape?

Ketch is the Supernatural Severus Snape

The Harry Potter fandom has a unique view of Snape that no other fandom has really had, until now.

Snape is not a nice person. Actually, that is being kind. He is a terrible person. Completely horrible. He bullied children, probably mentally scarred Harry and had an obsession with Harry’s mother Lily. Yes, he turned out to be on the side of good, sacrificed his life, etc etc. But as a person, he was really really horrible.

But as a character he is amazing. You can’t deny that Snape as a character in the Harry Potter series is amazing. It’s a very strange love-hate relationship we have going. We love Snape, in some way, in Harry Potter but we hate this person. And rightly so too.

And that is how Ketch in Supernatural is like Snape in Harry Potter.

Ketch has crossed lines that can quite possibly never be uncrossed. He has become a thorn in the side for the fandom and has brought out emotions like no other character before him. As a person and as an individual we despise Ketch, but as a character, we absolutely adore him. He is an essential part to the Supernatural story that could not be easily replaced.
