Easy A – What’s in a (food) name?

Easy A may not get the recognition that Mean Girls or The Breakfast Club get, but it’s definitely one of the best teen movies of the 2010s. Not only was it a comment on how teenage girls were treated in high school, but also showed the world how funny, likable, and charming Emma Stone was. With an Oscar to her name now, Emma Stone has definitely come a long way!

The film was heavily inspired by the novel The Scarlet Letter, about a woman forced to wear a red A on her clothing after committing adultery, who’s tormented and shunned by her community. In Easy A, Olive (Stone) gets a reputation for sleeping around after a lie she started herself gets out of hand. She embraces the reputation at first, and even sews a red “A” to her outfits (“A is for awesome!”).

Olive’s name is the butt of a few jokes in the film, since, obviously, olives are a type of food. You may not have noticed, but the whole family has food names! Olive’s mother (Patricia Clarkson) is named Rosemary, and her father (Stanley Tucci) is Dill. Her younger (adopted) brother is named Chip, and her older brother in college (who is referenced but never shown) is named Kale.

Speaking of names, at one point in the film, Olive tells another character that her name is an anagram for “I love.” Well, her last name, Penderghast, is also an anagram… for “pretend shag.” A “pretend shag” is exactly what started Olive’s problems in the first place.
