Love, Simon – An early hint at Blue’s true identity

Love, Simon only came out recently, but it has already found its way into the hearts of audiences around the world. The film, the first major studio release to feature a gay teenage protagonist, has been named an instant classic and also an important step for LGBTQ inclusion in mainstream media.

The film is about Simon (Nick Robinson), a teenager in his senior year of high school, who’s perfectly average but has one big secret: he’s gay, and nobody knows. When he finds out there’s another gay student at his school, the two begin corresponding through anonymous emails, and Simon develops a crush on his online friend.

But when classmate Martin stumbles onto his emails accidentally, he threatens to leak them to the school if Simon doesn’t help him get close to his friend Abby, who Martin has a crush on.

If you haven’t seen the film yet and don’t want to be spoiled, you might want to stop reading now!

In one scene in the cafeteria, Martin makes a joke to Abby asking what you would call a person who was both Black and Jewish. “Blewish” or Blue-ish. When, in the end, we find out that Blue is actually Bram, Simon says “You’re Jewish?” To which Bram responds, “yeah, and I’m Black!”

Martin’s joke was foreshadowing of the big reveal. Bram is Black and Jewish, Blue-ish. His screen name is Blue. That hint was in front of us for a while, and yet, all those red herrings threw us off his trail! So sneaky.
