EuroTrip – Matt Damon’s role hit a bit close to home

Every teenager’s first trip to Europe may not resemble the disastrous one shown in EuroTrip, but references to the raunchy film will definitely be made throughout their travels.

In the same vein as American Pie, EuroTrip is an explicit comedy about a group of teenage friends who head across Europe after graduating high school when Scotty’s girlfriend dumps him. He’s on a mission to find his hot Internet pen pal Mieke, and his friends come along for the ride.

At the beginning of the movie, Scott (Scott Mechlowicz) finds out his girlfriend, Fiona (Kristin Kreuk), has been cheating on him with the lead singer of the band Lustra, Donny (played by Matt Damon). When the band is performing at their graduation party, Donny performs the song “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” with such deep and insightful lyrics as “Scotty doesn’t know that Fiona and me/Do it in my van every Sunday/She tells him she’s in church but/She doesn’t go/Still she’s on her knees and/Scotty doesn’t know.”

Matt Damon may have taken the role because he related to Scotty’s character. In real life, he was actually dumped by a girlfriend who left him for Lars Ulrich, the drummer for the rock band Metallica. Maybe he has a sense of humor about it!

Damon actually agreed to do the cameo as the lead singer of the band because he went to college with filmmakers Jeff Shaffer, Alec Berg, and Dave Mandell. He was filming The Brothers Grimm at the time and was required to wear a wig for that role. So for his brief appearance in EuroTrip, he decided to shave his head in order to get that true punk-rock look down perfectly.
