Pretty In Pink – Another Hughes project inspired by his muse

Like we already mentioned, John Hughes was very receptive to his biggest stars, namely Molly Ringwald. In the case of Pretty In Pink, the project wouldn’t have even happened if it wasn’t for the young star.

Pretty In Pink is your classic tale of a poor girl who falls for the rich guy and feels like she’s not worth it. Andie (Ringwald) is from the wrong side of the tracks, and she falls for Blane (Andrew McCarthy), a rich, popular boy from school. Her best friend Duckie (Jon Cryer) is also in love with Andie, so naturally, he hates Blane and discourages Andie from pursuing the rich guy.

It was actually Ringwald who asked John Hughes to write the film. She loved the song “Pretty in Pink” by the Psychedelic Furs, and approached Hughes to write a movie based on it. When they began casting, the filmmakers wanted Blane to be your typical jock, but Ringwald wasn’t attracted to that kind of guy.

Since she had some say in casting, when she saw Andrew McCarthy’s audition, she said that he was the kind of guy she would fall in love with. They didn’t think he was right for the part, but Ringwald pushed for the casting and got her way.

Sadly, this would be the last time Ringwald worked with Hughes. When the studio forced Hughes to reshoot the ending to make Andie end up with Blane — instead of the intended ending where Andie falls for Duckie — he was not happy. To get back at them, he made Some Kind of Wonderful the next year, with virtually the same story, but that ended his way.

Hughes obviously approached his muse Ringwald, but she refused because the film was too similar to Pretty In Pink. Hughes was offended by her refusal, and they never worked together again.
