Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion – Only smart girls can play dumb that well
In Mean Girls, they cast a nice girl as the mean girl, because only a nice girl could play a mean girl. Well, in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, they hired two smart girls to play dumb girls, because to seem that dumb, you have to be pretty smart!
Romy and Michele is about, obviously, Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow), two best friends who move to L.A. together after graduating from high school in Tucson, Arizona. They were loners in high school, tormented by the school’s popular clique, but were happy as long as they were together.
When their high school reunion is around the corner, the girls vow to make their lives look more impressive to their former classmates. This includes losing weight, getting better jobs (or any job), and pulling up in a cool convertible. They come up with the bright idea to say they invented Post-Its, but it’s not long before their lie blows up in their faces.
In real life, Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are actually much smarter than their on-screen personas. Kudrow has a degree in biology from Vassar College, and Mira Sorvino has a degree in Asian studies from Harvard University. Due to their educated backgrounds, they would refer to each other as “Smart” and “Smarter”.
Kudrow proved how smart she was when she had to explain the formula for glue in one scene. During a dream sequence, Michele claims she invented a “special” kind of glue. Christy presses her for more details, and Michele then launches into a detailed description of how the glue is made. Kudrow made up the entire “special glue” formula on the spot.
