“Pokémon Go” is getting ready to launch a bunch of new Pokémon. Is this because of the upcoming mobile game “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery?”

“Pokémon Go” has been sitting as king of the mobile games for some time now. Since its initial release in July 2016, the free-to-play AR game by Niantic has seen success like no other game before it. It has however not gone without its fair share of criticism, and with the upcoming mobile game “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” set for release later this month. Has the recent news that new Pokémon are coming in response to the impending competition they are about to face?

“Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery,” which is to be available on both iOS and Android, is an RPG game developed by Jam City and published by Portkey Games. Dubbed the “Harry Potter Pokémon Go,” players are able to create their own avatar, customize it to their own liking and head off to Hogwarts where they can be sorted, attend magical lessons, cast spells and duel one another.

With the voices of Warwick Davis, Dame Maggie Smith, and Michael Gambon from the Harry Potter series as Professor Flitwick, Professor McGonagall and Professor Dumbledore being provided, “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery,” is as real as it gets for fans of the J.K. Rowling series.

“Pokémon Go” vs “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery”

It’s something “Pokémon Go” should be wary of. Granted the games are completely separate, “Pokémon Go” is an AR game while “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” is an RPG. Both fandoms are completely different as well but there will be fans playing “Pokémon Go” that are fans of Harry Potter.

In terms of numbers, it depends where you look, but according to one source in 2017 “Pokémon Go” had around five million daily users and 65 million monthly active users and that after a year since its launch millions are still playing. Another source, however, explains that approximately four out of five users have quit the game since it began.

More from Harry Potter

It’s a bit hard to compare the numbers to “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” since this will be the first mobile game from the Wizarding World franchise but if you decided to use the books as a basis, it’s an eye-watering comparison.

When “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was first released it sold 8.3 million copies in 24 hours, and that was just in the U.S. One in every 15 people own a copy of Harry Potter and with the world’s population roughly 7.6 Billion that’s a lot of people, therefore a lot of potential players for “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” and a lot of potential competition for “Pokémon Go.”

Whether this latest influx of Pokémon characters is to entice players to stay rather than migrate elsewhere is certainly possible, but understandably, not going to be confirmed by Niantic.
