The Baudelaire Orphans – Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

These poor souls cant’ seem to catch a break. They are continually and routinely double-crossed, threatened, malnourished, neglected, and abused. Constantly plagued by an aggressive Count, hell-bent on stealing the money they inherited from their parents’ tragic deaths, the Baudelaire children are far beyond their years.

Each sibling possesses a special talent, but the most remarkable of the three is the baby Sunny. Still a toddler, she uses her sharp teeth to fashion handy items out of wood and has the driest wit of them all. Barely able to walk, Sunny has to be carried most everywhere by her older siblings.

Klaus and Violet don’t mind because, in a world that is constantly presenting clear and imminent danger, they realize they are all they have. They bounce around from one guardian to the next, and each time their circumstances become more dire than the last.

Violet uses her keen math and engineering skills to build ingenious gadgets and devices while Klaus has enough book smarts to get them through almost all their struggles. Most of their struggles, it should be noted, are a direct result of the nefarious Count Olaf and his incessant scheme to get their money, no matter the cost to the orphans.

These siblings value staying together, above all else, and there are little other examples of such family loyalty around. The Baudlelaire orphans are made out of tough stuff, and some of that is their togetherness. They couldn’t survive without each other.
