My Big Fat Greek Wedding: Apples and oranges

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a small movie with big laughs that became a huge hit. Toula tries to change her life and break free from her suffocating Greek family. When she falls in love with a non-Greek man, her family has to learn to adapt, and so does her boyfriend, Ian.

One of the running jokes throughout the movie is that Toula’s father likes to prove the Greek root of every word. At Toula and Ian’s wedding, he explains that the Greek root meaning of Ian’s surname, Miller, is apple. Toula also explains in the film that the root meaning of her family name is orange.

Well, in the restaurant on Ian and Toula’s first date, there are two glass jars in the background at the beginning of the scene. One is filled with apples and the other with oranges.

Those jars represent Ian Miller, the apple, and Toula Portokalos, the orange. The filmmakers did that as a nod to Ian and Toula’s relationship early on in the movie. It’s fun little details like this that we love!

Another fun fact about My Big Fat Greek Wedding was the support it received from the community they were filming in. When it came to catering on-set, they barely had to lift a finger. When local Greek restaurants heard about the production, they would send over loads of free food for the cast and crew!

It’s always a good sign when the locals are supportive of a production. Usually that means the cast and crew are being respective of their surroundings, which sadly isn’t always the case.
