Trainwreck: When a dream casting becomes reality

When writing a screenplay, a lot of filmmakers will have a certain actor in mind while writing those characters. Sometimes, they actually land those stars, while other times, they have to settle on someone else who can fit the part. While Amy Schumer was writing Trainwreck, there was one star she had in mind for a specific role, and she ended up landing them.

Schumer described her character’s boss, an editor at a men’s magazine, as a “Tilda Swinton type.” Luckily for Schumer, director Judd Apatow had some connections and called Swinton directly to offer her the part. Swinton was a huge fan, and one thing lead to another, and Dianna came to life.

Swinton is known for her icy blonde, short cropped hair and fair skin, as well as her avant-garde fashion style. But Dianna was the complete opposite. She had shoulder length brown hair with highlights and a glowing orange tan.

The actress really went all out to play Dianna. In fact, she was given full creative control over how she wanted to portray the character. She chose the wig and agreed to the daily tanning sessions and heavy eye makeup in order to emulate a specific look: Carine Roitfield. That’s right, Tilda Swinton modeled the character after the former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief.

“She’s over the top, over-tanned, and does everything in the biggest way,” the film’s makeup artist Kyra Panchenko told Entertainment Weekly about the actress’ transformation. “Tilda kept saying in her cute accent, ‘I’m a hot mess.’”

In fact, the transformation was so major, a lot of viewers probably didn’t even know it was her until the credits rolled.
