Annie Hall: A cast of horror icons

What is it with romantic comedies having so many links to horror movies?

Six different actors who appear in Annie Hall eventually went on to star in iconic horror movies at some point in their career.

Sigourney Weaver, who plays Alvy’s (Woody Allen) date towards the end of the film, starred in the Alien franchise as Ripley. Shelley Duvall, who plays Pam, starred in The Shining. And Christopher Walken, who plays Duane, starred in the 1983 film The Dead Zone.

But wait, there’s more. Carol Kane and Colleen Dewhurst both co-starred in 1979’s When a Stranger Calls. And we couldn’t forget Jeff Goldblum, who went on to star in 1986’s The Fly.

With all these horror connections, it’s surprising there aren’t more romantic comedy-horror movie crossovers. Who wouldn’t want to see a heartfelt comedy where the boy next door and the pretty cheerleader get into hilarious hijinx while trying to court each other, and everyone dies at the end? So romantic, and perfect for date night!

Another fun fact about Annie Hall is the name, which was almost very different. The original title was Anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure. The name was scrapped for many reasons, including how hard it would be to market a film with such an odd name, and Woody Allen compromised by naming the film after the main character.

Would you have gone to see A Rollercoaster Named Desire instead?
