When Harry Met Sally: Great stars with even better ideas

Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) have been friends for years. The film follows their friendship as they both struggle to find love, but always end up running back into each other. They finally develop a close friendship, but soon realize how tricky it can be for a man and woman to remain friends without sex getting in the way.

When you think of When Harry Met Sally, there’s probably one scene that sticks out in your memory more than the others: “I’ll have what she’s having!”

In the infamous scene, Harry and Sally are talking about women faking orgasms. Harry is positive he’s good enough in bed that women don’t need to fake it and laughs away Sally’s implications.

Sally then fakes an orgasm very loudly and realistically in the middle of a restaurant. When she finishes, so to speak, a woman in the background stops the waiter and tells them, “I’ll have what she’s having!”

What may surprise you is the fact that that moment wasn’t originally in the script. Meg Ryan had suggested the idea of faking it, and director Rob Reiner loved it so much he added it in. Not only did she suggest the fake orgasm part, but she also gave screenwriter Nora Ephron the idea to set it in a restaurant to give the scene that extra punch. It just would not have been the same if the two had been sitting in their apartment or some other quiet, secluded place.

And the line “I’ll have what she’s having” was actually suggested by Billy Crystal. What would a movie be without some great stars with even better ideas?
