Miss Congeniality: An artistic nudge to the audience

Who doesn’t love this tale of an FBI agent undercover as a beauty queen to fight against a terrorist attack? Miss Congeniality definitely isn’t your typical rom-com!

As anyone who has seen the movie will tell you, the big shocker is that the terrorist threatening the Miss United States organization is none other than the head of the organization, Kathy Morningside (Candice Bergen). She and her son Frank are getting their revenge on the pageant for firing her after years of service.

Their plan is to embed a bomb into the winner’s crown. Once they announce her name and place the crown on her head, Frank has to press a button and detonate the explosives to kill the beauty queen and likely those around her. Obviously, Gracie and Agent Matthews are too smart to let that happen, and figure it out right at the last minute.

In one scene when Frank is preparing the crown/bomb in the prop room before the big event, you can hear one of the contestants singing on stage. The song is the “Queen of the Night” aria. This song brings a lot of symbolism to the scene that a lot of people never noticed.

When this aria appears in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, the Queen of the Night demands that her daughter kill someone for her. Sound familiar? Frank’s mom is demanding he plant a bomb on the winner of the Miss United States Pageant.

This is such a smart little nudge to the audience that most of us missed completely!
