Harry Potter is more than just a way for companies to make money

Wherever you go there is Harry Potter merchandise but is it more than a money-making machine?

There is always something new coming to town with a Harry Potter theme. Whether you find T-shirts, bags, replica wands, coffee shops with a wizard theme, or even a train journey on the actual Hogwarts Express, there is something that will make you think of the Boy Wizard. With the Fantastic Beasts series of movies and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” now coming to Broadway, it looks like the franchise has just become a money making machine.

It’s certainly understandable why some people would think that. However, it’s mostly those who haven’t read the books or watched the movies that view it as this. The same can be said for the majority of fandoms. Only the fans deeply understand the worlds and their messages, making them willing to spend money on items that can seem like junk or a waste of time to others.

More from Harry Potter

But Harry Potter is more than just a money making machine. It’s a world of inspiration and positive messages. Whether it’s about the friendship and acceptance of people from different walks of life or having the courage to do the right thing, young people will learn something about themselves and the way to treat others from the books and movies.

This is more than just entertainment, in the way the old-school Disney movies were. Harry Potter makes it clear that it’s good to protest when you feel what you believe in is right. There’s a message of acceptance and anti-bullying throughout. Even just through the house sorting, there’s a message of personality traits and how they can shape who you are and what you do.

These messages are seen throughout the books. Look at how Harry starts to connect to Luna Lovegood or how Harry, Ron and Hermione become good friends despite the odds. Consider the way Dumbledore’s Army was created, despite the government and some teachers refusing to believe the truth.

While opening themed cafes and selling merchandise is certainly going to make someone money, it’s not the fault of the Harry Potter world. This isn’t J.K. Rowling’s doing. What Rowling created was a beautiful world with excellent messages of inspiration for fans everywhere.
