Does the Fantastic Beasts’ Niffler need his own movie?

The niffler stole the hearts of fans with his crazy antics in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but should he get his own spin-off movie.

When you think of the niffler from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you likely thought of the squirrel from Ice Age. Or you may have thought of the minions from Despicable Me. Many movies add one creature for comedic relief. Usually, this creature has nothing to do with the actual storyline, but it’s an entertaining element, especially for the kids.

With the minions getting their own movie and Madagascar’s penguins getting their own spin-off series, there is the question now as to whether the Fantastic Beasts’ niffler should get his own movie. Is this a character that we need to see more of?

See what the second movie is like

Before jumping on the idea of giving him a movie, let’s look at what he can get up to in the second movie. Will he even be part of that movie?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is setting up the bigger storyline: Newt working for Albus Dumbledore. There may not be time for the niffler’s quirky scenes and this could put a swift end to the idea of him getting his own franchise or mini-series.

There’s no need for a full movie, though. This is a character that doesn’t talk, so it would be a relatively boring movie. Plus, the idea of him doing anything other than making Newt’s job a little harder doesn’t really make sense in the way that the minion’s backstory did.

Keep the niffler within the movie

If he does show up, the best thing to do for the niffler would be to keep it contained within the movie. Treat the niffler’s antics like Ice Age’s squirrel, focusing on the storyline for about five minutes before moving back to the main story.

This is kind of what the first movie did, but Newt was there within the shots. The niffler would need five minutes of screen time alone doing something that has nothing to do with the movie storyline itself. The squirrel in Ice Age is constantly after an acorn. The niffler could go after a piece of gold or another pretty piece of jewellery, which pops up at the very beginning of the movie.
