Penny Dreadful — Showtime
What it is: Penny Dreadful is super scary, for one. Otherwise, it’s a Victorian period monster drama that will bring you fun literary names like Dorian Gray and Victor Frankenstein. Set in the dark, Gothic corners of 19th century London, this is a psychological thriller that explores the origin stories of some of our favorite monsters.
The title refers to the tabloid-esque papers of the time that offered lurid and sensational stories featuring the very characters that the series features. Eva Green plays Vanessa, a young woman who acquires a powerful gift that she has to use to battle forces seen and unseen. Josh Hartnett plays the American cowboy with a supernatural secret of his own, and plays a bit of a love interest for Green’s Vanessa.
Why you’ll like it: It’s gorgeous in a really creepy and unsettling way. It will visually remind you of Game of Thrones because it’s shot through a gray and hazy filter. Offering an ominous vibe to everything, the streets of Penny Dreadful‘s London look strikingly similar to the Starks’ Winterfell.
Penny Dreadful has elements of horror and suspense, but it’s also an interesting period study about life in Victorian England. It will make you jump out of your skin on a regular basis, but it offers a really interesting look at the perilous underbelly of Victorian society.
How to find it: You can find all three seasons on Netflix.
