The Fantastic Beasts 2 trailer has dropped and we’re already full of questions. One of those surrounds the young Albus Dumbledore and a particular statement.

If you’ve missed the Fantastic Beasts 2 trailer then we can only assume you’ve been living under a rock. That’s the only excuse you have. The trailer dropped earlier this week and while it gave us a peek at the things to expect from the movie in November, it also brought up so many questions. One of those surrounds Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore, as he made it clear that Newt would have to be the one to stop Grindelwald.

After making us laugh-out-loud by denying Newt is one of his agents, Dumbledore is later spotted with the young Magizoologist. While on top of a building, Dumbledore makes it clear that he can’t oppose Grindelwald just yet. The big question for many Harry Potter fans is why? Why can’t Dumbledore make a move on Grindelwald right now?

Harry Potter fans don’t know the full truth yet

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it seemed like the truth was revealed. Dumbledore admits that his friendship with Grindelwald had tragic consequences. Their spells together became increasingly more dangerous and it led to Aberforth Dumbledore confronting the wizards. They entered a three-way duel that led to the death of Albus and Aberforth’s sister, Ariana, and Albus forever blamed himself for it.

The friendship between Albus and Grindelwald was forever broken, but Albus hinted that the guilt also left Grindelwald being allowed to rise to power. But was it really just the guilt?

There’s likely a link to real history

We know that Dumbledore is the one to eventually defeat Grindelwald. The duel between the two wizards is legendary and one of the reasons why Dumbledore is so famous. What we don’t know are the events leading up it. This is where Fantastic Beasts 2 may be coming in to fill in the blanks.

The Fantastic Beasts movies are set during the 1930s and into the 1940s, telling the story of the rise and fall of Grindelwald. It shouldn’t be that surprising that Grindelwald rose around the same time as Hitler and fell from power in 1945—the time World War II came to an end.

While there were many against Nazi Germany, many others in the British government chose “appeasement” instead of action. They didn’t want to interfere with another country’s politics until it turned into a world war. That’s what the Ministry of Magic is doing now; avoiding the interference in other country’s politics and magic.

To go against the Ministry of Magic would be dangerous for Dumbledore. It’s not time for him to go up against Grindelwald, but that time will come soon.

As all the pieces fit together, we may find that Dumbledore was never guilty of inaction or taking the wrong steps. He did what he could at the time and that meant sending Newt off to tackle the problem until he was in a position to help on the front line.
