Harry Potter and the snow day blues: Why we like to watch

As a winter storm rolls in around the United States, many Potter fans are turning to the Harry Potter series to cure their boredom. But why do we go to Harry and his friends?

Snow days are often filled with Harry Potter marathons. Whether that is intentional or just something comforting when it is scary outside still remains to be unknown. But whatever the cause may be, most Potter fans find themselves crying over their favorite movies whenever they’re trapped inside for an extended period of time.

So why is that? Personally, I think it is because these movies fill us with a specific kind of warmth that can bring us back to feeling like a normal person when the outside has us afraid we’ll be trapped for years.

Think of it like this: When you’re upset, you turn to a movie, book or song for comfort, right? So why wouldn’t those same principals apply when you’re cold and don’t want to go outside because it is too cold to function? Surprise! They do!

Like it is just so nice to be sitting on the couch with a blanket and a hot cup of tea, watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and seeing Harry final meet Sirius Black. Maybe this is just accurate for the Harry Potter generation. Maybe we lucked out and we have a series that instantly brings us comfort no matter when we chose to watch it.

But still, it is something we can share with each other as well as people who might not yet be fans of the series. Because really, who doesn’t want to sit and watch a movie about magic when it is snowing outside?
