3 questions we have after Black Lightning episode 7: Equinox: The Book of Fate

In the latest episode of Black Lightning, Tobias Whale lost a friend and eliminated an enemy, but he has no idea there’s a new superhero on the horizon.

The episode gave the perfect amount of attention to Anissa and her powers following last week’s reveal. On the one hand, Lynn and Jefferson continued to demonstrate what unified parenting and good communication look like. But on the other, Lynn finally started to understand why members of her family choose the vigilante life.

At one point in the episode, she recalls a 10-month-old Anissa learning how to walk and realizes that her daughter will don the costume, with or without her help. Then, she employs Gambi to make a suit and Jefferson to train Anissa. For someone who forced Black Lightning to quit once upon a time, she’s come a long way.

Unfortunately, Anissa will need to suit up either way. Since Tobias removed Lady Eve from the equation (after she removed his right hand, Joey Toledo, via Gambi), he will probably become an even bigger threat in Freeland.

This brings us to the three questions we have after watch last night’s episode, “Equinox: The Book of Fate.”

1. Is Gambi an arms dealer?

To defeat Lady Eve (and subsequently frame Black Lightning), Tobias sent his men after her with guns that manipulate electric powers, just like Black Lightning. Since Gambi builds the suits and knows how the powers work, was part of his deal with Lady Eve about selling weapons? Did he make those guns, or does someone else know how to do it? If it was Gambi, then he has even more explaining to do.

2. Who is an experiment and who is a metahuman?

Or are they the same thing?

Black Lightning isn’t framed as an origin story. It’s about Jefferson Pierce’s return as Black Lightning. Therefore, I don’t know how he got his powers. It’s all really unclear. So far, we know that his father investigated human experimentation and possibly metahumans. We also know that his investigation would’ve exposed Tobias, who hasn’t aged in 30 years. Then, there’s also the green light drug business. So, is Tobias Dr. Frankenstein or the monster created?

Obviously, something is genetic, since Black Lightning passed his powers to Anissa. Still, that doesn’t explain whether Black Lightning was created or born that way.

3. How did LaLa come back?

At the very end of the episode, LaLa wakes up in a hotel room. Yes, the guy that Tobias killed more than a few episodes ago is actually alive again. At the Seahorse Hotel, he takes a deep breath and sees LaWanda, one of his murder victims. She asks if he believes in resurrection before fading to white dust and becoming a tattoo on his chest. I assume he will eventually evolve into a version of the DC villain Tattooed Man, but that will only take us back to my second question.
