15 TV shows LGBTQ people should binge in 2018
Queer Eye (Netflix)
When news of the revival of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy first surfaced, many people were skeptical. Was the show still relevant in today’s social climate? Well, it turns out, it is!
Set in Georgia, the new Fab Five set out to makeover the lives of seven straight (and one gay) men around the state. Not only did they update their homes, de-clutter their closets, and give them stylish new haircuts, but they also helped them gain confidence and take control of their personal and professional lives.
AJ is the one gay man that the Fab Five help out. He lives much of his life as “straight acting” and in his featured episode, is nervous about coming off as “too gay”. AJ is in a happy relationship with a man (and the two are now engaged!) but he isn’t out to family and coworkers. Enter the Fab Five.
The boys help AJ gain more confidence by making him more comfortable in his skin as a gay, black man. They also encourage him to come out to his step-mother, which creates one of the most tear-jerking moments of the season.
Not only is there a touching coming out scene, there’s also a general sense of acceptance throughout the season. The “straight guys” are so open to this group of gay men bombarding them and taking over their homes, which is so lovely to see at a time when there is so much hate and bigotry happening around the country.
If that isn’t enough, uh, hello, the Fab Five themselves are amazing. It’s hard to hate the unapologetically flamboyant Jonathan, who gives the show some much needed sass. They’re so charming, and let’s be honest, some of them are hot, hot, hot!
