Please Like Me (Netflix)

Please Like Me is an Australian comedy that aired from 2013 until 2016. The show follows 20-something gay male Josh as he navigates through the world of dating, friends, and dealing with his complicated family.

Josh often finds himself disconnected from the gay community because he doesn’t know where he fits in. At first, he doesn’t even really realize he’s gay!

He’s often self-conscious about his body and about the way he treats other people. Whether you’re gay, straight, or anything in between, you’ll probably relate to Josh’s awkwardness when it comes to flirting, and will no doubt laugh out loud at his lack of a filter.

Besides the topic of love and sexuality, the show also deals pretty heavily with the subject of mental health. Several characters throughout the series deal with varying mental health issues, from social anxiety to crippling depression, disorders that affect people from all walks of life.

Josh’s mother Rose suffers from bipolar disorder and we learn early on that she has attempted suicide. There’s also Hannah, a friend of Rose whom she met while in the hospital. While she struggles with her depression for most of the series, you can’t help but love her for trying her best to be part of the group. If there’s one thing to say about Please Like Me, it’s that it has a cast of very loveable, realistic characters.

Though the show is a comedy, it clearly deals with bigger issues, and it tackles them perfectly. The show is realistic and kind of dark, because sometimes real life sucks, but you just have to laugh about it.
