The L Word (Netflix)

If you read our description of Queer as Folk and thought, “Wow, this would be better if it was lesbian-centric” then you’re in luck. The L Word can be described as a more lesbian version of QAF, but that doesn’t mean the shows are really that similar.

Premiering in 2004, the show was met with acclaim and praise. There weren’t many lesbian characters on television at the time, and when there was, they were usually in the background or the butt of the joke.

But things changed with The L Word. The show aired on Showtime, the network that also brought us, you guessed it, Queer As Folk, so that helped the show have a bit more freedom when it came to some of the sexual content. The L Word featured lesbian relationships, trans characters, and several women of color, and a lot of these components would not have been present on other shows in 2004.

Like Queer as Folk, it might be outdated and at times problematic in today’s more progressive world, but it doesn’t mean it’s any less important for LGBTQ viewers. It’s important to know what came before us in order to understand what we’re headed for in the future.

Even though it was problematic at times, for many people who grew up with this show, it was all they had, and for that reason, it became a beloved show for many LGBTQ individuals. That’s why we’re still talking about it to this day.

Plus, it’s always great to laugh at the early 2000s fashion, too, isn’t it?
