15 TV shows LGBTQ people should binge in 2018
Sense8 (Netflix)
When a show is created by two transgender women, you hope that it has some kind of diversity, and with Sense8, we’re in luck.
Sense8, created by the Wachowski sisters, follows eight individuals from all around the world who all have a physic connection to one another. They are what is known as “sensates”, people who are emotionally and mentally linked, and are able to communicate via their minds, and share their languages and skills.
The sensates, Capheus, Sun, Nomi, Kala, Riley, Wolfgang, Lito, and Will are a diverse group of individuals, as expected, since they are spread out around different nations. As far as LGBTQ diversity, Nomi is a trans woman in a relationship with a cisgender black woman. There’s also Lito, a closeted gay actor in Mexico who lives with his boyfriend Hernando.
Lito has to deal with juggling his career, his fake girlfriend, and his real boyfriend, all while learning to accept his newfound abilities. When he opens up about his sexuality, he has to deal with bigotry and homophobia, but he still finally feels free.
Since the group are all connected emotionally, the lines of sexual orientation are sometimes kind of blurred. In one scene, the sensates have a big, gay celebration (filmed on a float at a real Sao Paolo pride parade) in honor of Lito revealing his true self. All of them, gay, straight, trans, are celebrating their freedom, and it’s a beautiful sight to see.
There’s also a polysexual orgy that takes place between a gay man, a transgender lesbian, and two straight men. But we don’t want to give too much away!
Sadly, Sense8 was canceled after two seasons. Luckily for fans, a finale special will be released sometime this year.
