Six Feet Under (HBO Go)

You wouldn’t think a show about a family-run funeral home would be a memorable part of gay TV history, but Six Feet Under would prove you wrong.

Six Feet Under is about the Fisher family who run their own funeral home, and their lives outside of the funeral business. Even though the show dealt a lot with death (obviously), this morbid, dark comedy featured a well-loved gay couple.

David Fisher, played by Dexter‘s Michael C. Hall, was the closeted middle child of the Fisher clan. He was often tense due to his hidden sexuality keeping him on edge at all times. After the death of his father, David and his brother are left co-owners of their family’s funeral business, even though David studied law and hoped to leave the family business to become a lawyer.

David also has a long-time boyfriend, Keith, who he refers to as his racquetball partner. Keith is an African-American cop and openly gay, which obviously conflicts with David’s need to keep his sexuality under wraps. The way Six Feet Under portrayed this couple is often applauded.

David and Keith were a real couple. They had struggles, they go to counseling. They are committed, and eventually have plans to extend their family. In 2001, when the pinnacle of  gay representation were shows like Queer as Folk and Will & Grace, it was refreshing to see a gay couple treated like a normal, boring couple with dreams of settling down and starting a family.

The show doesn’t revolve solely around David and his sexuality, but the topic of death and complicated family issues are pretty universally relatable.
