15 TV shows LGBTQ people should binge in 2018
RuPaul’s Drag Race (Netflix, OutTV Go)
Like Will & Grace, if you haven’t watched this show yet, what are you doing?!
RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered back in 2009, but it wasn’t until recent years that it started gaining so much mainstream attention. After the latest seasons were added to Netflix and the show moved from Logo to VH1, Drag Race has never been so popular.
With RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 currently airing, and season 10 of the show premiering right after All Stars finishes (honestly, we’re not prepared), it’s an understatement to say Drag Race is a cultural phenomenon. There’s a reason: the show is fun, hilarious, unique, and an important queer history lesson for younger viewers.
You can’t explore LGBTQ culture without a stop in drag culture. Drag queens and trans women were vital to the gay rights movement, and on Drag Race, Ru is sure to pay homage to drag and other queer icons. It’s important that younger LGBTQ fans know that their history isn’t just white gay men.
Speaking of diversity, this show has tons of it. In fact, the show didn’t have a Caucasian winner until the fourth season! The cast is usually filled with Latin, African-American, and Asian queens, and has even featured a handful of trans or gender non-binary queens.
Even if you’re not really into drag, give this show a chance, you’ll love it! Seasons 8 and 9 are currently on Netflix, but the entire series (minus the elusive first season) are on the OutTV Go streaming service.
