Oscars 2018: Guillermo del Toro wins Best Director

Tonight’s Best Director award went to The Shape of Water’s Guillermo del Toro.

Among a diverse range of skilled directors and artistic styles at this year’s Oscars, Guillermo del Toro won Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of Water. Nominees to share the Best Director category included Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread).

The 2018 Oscar nominees for Best Director included:

Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan: Christopher Nolan directed a suspenseful story of WWII troops who were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk as the German army advanced into France. Christopher Nolan didn’t win Best Director but Dunkirk left with three Oscars in Sound and Editing.

Get Out, Jordan Peele: Directed and written by Jordan Peele, this horror movie tells a story of an interracial couple where the boyfriend meets the parents for the first time. Things get uneasy when he finds out family secrets and is sent to “the sunken place.”

Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig: Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird is a coming-of-age story about a teenager and her dramatic relationship with her mother.

Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson: Phantom Thread tells the story of renowned English dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock through his creative journey in fashion. His journey finds bigger obstacles when he falls in love with his muse.

The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro: Guillermo del Toro directs a film with themes based on what it means to be human and possess empathy. The movie depicts a love story between a woman and an amphibian creature, gently reflecting how we should treat others who are not the same.

The most notable part of Guillermo del Toro’s win was the opening of his Oscar’s acceptance speech, saying:

"“In the last 25 years I have been living in a country all of our own. Part of it is here, part of it is in Europe, part of it is everywhere. Because I think that the greatest thing that art does, and that our industry does, is erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper”."
