Fantastic Beasts 2 actor had no idea about his character connection

Not all characters in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them connect directly to the Harry Potter series, but Derek Riddell learned that his definitely did.

Ask any non-Harry Potter fan about a character called Torquil Travers and they’ll tell you it just sounds like some made-up name for an odd movie. Derek Riddell, who will play that character in the Fantastic Beasts 2 movie later this year, admits that he thought it was just some character created, too. He had no idea that is connected to the Harry Potter franchise.

Travers was the last name of one of the Death Eaters under Lord Voldemort. While Torquil won’t be the exact same man, it’s clear that he’s not going to be friendly towards Newt Scamander in the prequel’s sequel movie. He’s joined by a character with the surname Rosier, who was another Death Eater. It’s possible the two will work together to foil whatever plan Scamander comes up with during the movie.

More from Harry Potter

You can see Travers’ descendants in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. It’s a relatively short clip and really just a fun connection between the movies.

Riddell has shared that while he initially believed his character was made up for the Fantastic Beasts 2 movie, he had a lot of fun making the movie. He also shares that there are a lot of connections to the Harry Potter movies, which, while made before this series of movies, are set in the future.
