Ruth Bader Ginsburg

There are fewer women more badass than the incomparable RBG. She is only the second female appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, preceded only by Sandra Day O’Connor. For a brief time, Bader Ginsburg was the only woman on the 12-seat court, and she has always been a solid advocate for justice and equality.

Over the years of her tenure, her rulings and opinions have become more and more strident, sticking firm to her ideals about what’s right in the world. She’s written many ground-breaking decisions concerning abortion and gender discrimination, and continues to uphold feminist and humanist ideologies. When Ginsburg was one of only nine female students in a class of 500 men, she had to continue to justify taking the spot of a “qualified man.

Married to the same man for over 60 years, with two children, Ginsburg spent her whole life fighting for her right to exist in the world along side men who were (often) less qualified. For her contributions, she has been named one of Forbes‘ “100 Most Powerful Women,” Glamour‘s “Women of the Year” in 2012 and even has a species of praying mantis named after her.

Her presence in the culture can’t be ignored either, as she’s recently become a pop culture juggernaut. To see her her influence, just count the number of RBG costumes you see on little girls at Halloween or check into her contribution to the #MeToo movement. Her power can’t be underestimated.
