I don’t care what you say; Argus Filch is a wizard to me!

Filch may be a so-called Squib but the Hogwarts caretaker really is a wizard.

Argus Filch might be the grumpy old Hogwarts caretaker but he is truly is an amazing man. His lovable and loyal cat, Mrs Norris, compliments him just perfectly and being a Squib just makes him even more extraordinary.

Imagine it, being a squib must be hard in the Wizarding world. To be born to magical parents but have no magical powers yourself would have been a lonely experience. In contrast to Muggle-born witches and wizards who would have most likely been praised and held in high regard to their parents. A Squib would have probably been shunned.

But although Filch may not have had magical powers he really was a wizard in his own way. His ability to keep the school of witchcraft and wizardly up and running is clear evidence that he has some magical caretaking powers.

Let’s just ignore the surrounding grounds of Hogwarts, as technically that would be Hagrid’s job, and just focus on the castle itself. How big Hogwarts is varies depending on where you look but the general consensus is, Hogwarts is huge.

Roughly seven stories tall, with over a hundred staircases in its many turrets and towers. There are dungeons, classrooms, banquet rooms, chambers, offices, storage rooms, magical rooms the list goes on and on. Hogwarts is a big place.

And no matter what happens, Filch is able to keep that place running. A castle made of stone in the Early Middle Ages so you can bet it needs some constant maintenance. Yes there are House Elves around and they do their fair share but they come out so infrequently that it doesn’t make much difference. The house elves are also more housekeepers than caretakers.

Most of us would find it difficult to keep up on top of an average house, never mind a castle. A castle, which has several hundred magical kids running around causing who knows what. Then there is Fred and George Weasley who are in a whole league of their own.

If any of us tried to keep that school running we would last approximately ten minutes before throwing in the towel. How Filch is able to do everything he does for that school is both extraordinary and quite obvious. He is a wizard. He may not be a normal magical wizard, but he is certainly a wizard.
