Olympics 2018: A ranking of all of Johnny Weir’s looks, from worst to best
2. The closing ceremonies look
As he notes in the Instagram caption, Weir saved one of the best looks for last here. While it doesn’t have any of his signature patterns, the jacket’s still a statement piece thanks to those flared sleeves and still draws attention easily because of those sleeves.
There’s a certain sort of solemnity to the closing ceremonies, and so it’s appropriate that this outfit isn’t eye-catching in the same way that many of the others are. Since it’s both tonally fitting for the event in question and also still a great ensemble, it takes its place as the second-best look he had throughout the Olympics this year.
1. The multicolored jacket
People like Tamar Herman pretty quickly realized that there are some fairly clear hanbok influences in this jacket, but it’s not like he’s wearing actual hanbok. So, points for avoiding cultural appropriation while also nodding to the traditional dress of the host country and looking amazing at the same time.
Weir definitely seems to prefer letting his jackets speak for themselves, but especially with a jacket like this one, the solid, pretty subtle pants pull all the attention to his shiny shoes and his jacket.
We haven’t even gotten to talk about the hair. As we’ve already stated, his hair is a big part of the fun of his outfits, but this was a complete look in the best sense of the word, with the sheen and color of his hair matching the jacket.
Even for Weir, this is a top-tier look, and absolutely his best from these Winter Olympics. Hopefully, when the 2022 Games roll around to Beijing, he’ll be right back there with Tara Lipinski talking about figure skating yet again and will bring all kinds of looks yet again to brighten things up once more. (Will he bring more than 13 suitcases, as the New York Times reported he did this time around? That’s an exciting storyline for those Games, right?)
