Black Panther earns another amazing $108 million this weekend

Blowing ahead of the $100 million estimates this weekend, Black Panther is still king of the box office for the second week in a row.
Three cheers for Black Panther, which had another killer weekend. Estimates say, in the movie’s second week, it brought home another $108 million. Compared to other second week numbers, it comes second only to The Force Awakens, which brought in $149 million, according to Box Office Mojo. It just surpassed the 2015 summer blockbuster Jurassic World ($106 million), and 2012’s The Avengers ($106 million) in second-week numbers.
Continually surpassing expectations, in its first week, the film was thought to open with $165 million. Nope, not this great movie. Instead, it raked in $202 million over the course of the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend. Now, this nears the domestic total to an overall $400 million and a gross of over $700 million when adding in the worldwide numbers.
But wait, there are other movies in theaters that have had to compete against the mega-hit Black Panther this week. The comedy movie Game Night, starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, opened to a nice $16 million, placing it at second in the box office. The film’s currently got a decently strong 81 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and follows a group of friends whose game night goes from good to bad when they find themselves solving a real murder mystery.
In third place is the children’s film Peter Rabbit, which previously held the second-place spot last week, with a $12 million earning. Coming in fourth is the sci-fi tale Annihilation ($11 million) with an all-star cast including Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac. And in fifth place this weekend is Fifty Shades Freed, hanging in there at $6 million after its third week in theaters.
Next: Should Marvel keep Ryan Coogler for Black Panther 2?
Next week, the Jennifer Lawrence-led movie Red Sparrow will be released in theaters as well as the Bruce Willis action film Death Wish. We welcome those movies with open arms, but it’s more than likely that Black Panther will hold its spot at the top come next weekend.
