Relax, Stranger Things fans: Netflix has debunked that major Duffer Brothers rumor

After rumors started swirling that the Duffer Brothers would leave Stranger Things after season 3, Netflix swiftly jumped in to debunk the “false” rumors.

On Tuesday, the Internet erupted at the thought that the Duffer Brothers would leave Stranger Things after season 3. On one side, the Duffer Brothers found a lot of success and might want to consider moving onto something new. But, on the other hand, the Duffer Brothers started Stranger Things after losing out on IT. Stranger Things became their baby — the world’s baby, really — so why abandon it now?

More importantly, this news doesn’t correspond with the Duffer Brothers’ plans for four (or five) seasons. Considering how many doors opened by the end of season 2, it’s hard to imagine that the creators would be able to tie up a satisfying amount of loose ends by the end of season 3. Then, if the Duffer Brothers left but the show continued, would the successors nail the tone in the same way?

Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that. Before the rumor spun too out of control, Netflix shut them down (with excellent GIF usage).

Not a lot of room for contention there, right?

Even if the Duffer Brothers weren’t happy about something at Netflix, the studio would do (or spend) a lot before throwing in the towel. I mean, these are the people who poached Shonda Rhimes from ABC and Ryan Murphy from 21st Century Fox.

Stranger Things is one of their heavyweight champs, and they’re probably not going to jeopardize the future of the show.

On the flip side, what if Netflix gave the Duffer Brothers the green light on a Stranger Things spinoff? Maybe we visit another dimension or even another decade. That’s the only compromise I’d be willing to entertain.

Stranger Things season 3, which will take place in 1985 and have only eight episodes, returns sometime in 2019.
