Four Years of Taylor Swift’s Hit Song “Style”
By Kara Johnson
Four Years Ago, Taylor Swift wrote her hit song “Style” with Max Martin and Shellback, and it became a hit song from Swift’s fifth studio album 1989.
“Style” impacted radio on February 9, 2015, as a single and reached No.6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it Swift’s third consecutive top 10 single from 1989 in the country. The music video was released just days after it impacted radio, and now has over half a billion views on YouTube.
While the song may be one of Swift’s most underrated singles, it’s one of her best. Classically catchy, and effortlessly wonderful is what makes “Style” so great. Its impact has been impeccable, and the video (directed by Kyle Newman) is one of the most artistic videos Swift has ever done with flawless visual affects.
But it’s performance is only half the reason as to why we love “Style” and why we celebrate it four years later. It’s the production and storytelling behind the song that proves Swift is as good a songwriter as she is a performer, artist, and entrepreneur.
"I loved comparing these timeless visuals with a feeling that never goes out of style … It’s basically one of those relationships that’s always a bit off … The two people are trying to forget each other. So, it’s like, “All right, I heard you went off with her,” and well, I’ve done that, too … My previous albums have also been sort of like, “I was right, you were wrong, you did this, it made me feel like this”—a righteous sense of right and wrong in a relationship. What happens when you grow up is you realize the rules in a relationship are very blurred and that it gets very complicated very quickly, and there’s not a case of who was right or who was wrong. – Taylor Swift"
The track showcases a brilliant case of storytelling, while the video gives a perfect perception of what it looks like to really be in style. Swift outdid herself with this one, and she has continued to do so ever since.
The world moves on but one thing is for sure, Taylor Swift will never go out of style. Help us celebrate four years of “Style” by telling us your favorite part of the song and what you think of the music video. We can’t wait to hear from you.
