15 unconventional TV couples that probably shouldn’t have worked

Sol Bergstein and Robert Hanson — Grace and Frankie
This relationship might be completely unconventional, but it is totally aspirational. We should all be so lucky as to marry our soulmates after 40 years of waiting and hiding. Sol and Robert’s relationship, now that they are together, isn’t really all that strange, but the way they go together is downright amazing.
Although they had to hurt their wives of 40 years by, all at once, coming out and then admitting they’d been having an affair with each other all along, the end sort of justifies the means. Sure, their spouses’ lives were completely blindsided and their worlds catastrophically altered, but true love wins in the end.
As partners in a law firm for most of their lives, they were always close, but because they were married to women, they could never really be happy. They took family vacations together, celebrated holidays with each other, and were staples in the every day mechanisms of each other’s lives. But it was never real until, at 70, they came out to their wives, children and the world, and then decided to be happy. They suffered a long time to get there, and yes, made a few folks unhappy along the way, but it was worth it all in the end.
