15 unconventional TV couples that probably shouldn’t have worked

Rogelio de la Vega and Xiomara Villanueva — Jane the Virgin
I’ve never rooted as hard for a couple as hard as I root for Rogelio and Xiomara every week. Their love story, although happy enough now, took years and years of separation and pain, and they are only just now finding their love story. It’s unusual that a couple’s feelings and love can withstand such a long separation, and it’s even more unusual that they can overcome all that to make it work.
Ro and Xo were high school sweethearts when she became pregnant with Jane. For a myriad of reasons, they parted ways, and Ro didn’t know that he had a daughter. Years later, when Jane was in her 20s, they were reunited.
Although Jane and Rogelio forge a healthy relationship, despite the years of being apart, it takes a little longer for Xo to get on board. As any telenovela goes, there was some major melodrama — sinister reality shows, the return of an old lover, disagreements about children and another woman. They went through a lot while they were apart, and even more once they were back in each other’s lives.
After all that, they fall in love again, and are married in the middle of a hurricane while Jane officiates their wedding. In their case, opposites not only attract, but are bonded for life and make exceptional and understanding partners out of each other.
