The Importance of Taylor Swift’s Spotify Comeback
By Kara Johnson
It’s been a question for months now. Why did Taylor Swift pull her entire discography from Spotify just to put it all back up again? The answer is simpler than you think.
Remember the summer days after Taylor Swift released her critically acclaimed album 1989 when she penned a letter to Apple and beforehand wrote in the Wall Street Journal all about the digital age of streaming music? We do too, and we’re proud of Swift for taking a stand. Plenty of artists wouldn’t have been as brave as her. She stepped out in faith and wasn’t expecting Apple to change their mind afterward about compensating artists. But that’s not all Swift did. She even went so far as to pull all of her music from Spotify, and Spotify did not follow in Apple’s footsteps. Instead, they just begged for her back but didn’t do anything to change their system.
So, for three long years in the Spotify world, listeners and the company were in Taylor drought. Instead of going to Spotify to listen to her music, fans had to buy her albums or look elsewhere. Why did Swift do it? To support up and coming artists, and because Swift believes that art shouldn’t be free. And ultimately, isn’t that What Spotify has supported in the past?
After speaking out, Apple Music listened to Swift, while Spotify continued not to.
So, now we know why Swift pulled the plug a few years ago from Spotify and went directly to Apple Music. But why did she come back to Spotify to promote her album reputation so many years later? We could go down a long list and try to explain why, but really, the answer is simple. She came back for the same reason she left. Yes, to support newer artists.
Before Swift dropped reputation, she announced that she was coming back to Spotify to celebrate 1989′s success. A few months later, the songstress put together a playlist of over 40 songs that she loves. Who was on that playlist? Newer artists and artists that up and coming and less popular than Swift. While she could have been promoting her own music, the singer/songwriter decided to go a different route with promotion and decided it was best to promote others music that she believed in.
And it’s worked. Artists who have been featured on Swift’s playlist have been nothing but grateful that she would care enough to promote their art.
These are only a few examples of the gratefulness of other artists due to Swift’s promotion. The “Look What You Made Me Do” singer could take advantage of this new era and do heavy promotion for her brand new single “End Game” (Featuring Future + Ed Sheeran) and her album as a whole, but instead, she’s turned everything upside down and changing the game like she always does. If we’re honest, the 28-year old doesn’t need promotion. Reputation has done perfectly fine on its own, and she knows this. So, why not promote those who aren’t as popular or the new artists that are just getting started? That’s simply brilliant, and simply showcases the heart of Swift.

So, yes, perhaps her albums were gone for a while from Spotify, but now their back and she’s using the platform in a better way. It’s no longer self-promotion for Swift but its the promotion of real art, and it’s the art she loves. So before you diss Swift, please remember what she’s doing. Please remember that she isn’t who the tabloids say she is. She’s a girl who loves music and wants to help other artists dreams come true.
