Taylor Swift Song of the Week: “Safe and Sound”

Remember the days where Taylor Swift collaborated with The Civil Wars for the Hunger Games Soundtrack and it was everything we’ve ever dreamed of?

“Safe and Sound” has always been one of our favorite songs from Swift, and the icing on the cake is the collaboration with the folk duo The Civil Wars. It’s a timeless, somber track that will forever stand out in her discography as one of the great hits. The imagery and storytelling throughout the song are vivid and explains the scene of Rue’s death in The Hunger Games quite perfectly.

It’s a lullaby and it’s a brilliant approach when we are speaking about a movie like The Hunger Games. The vocals between both The Civil Wars and Swift are a perfect blend of country and pop, and they make an iconic trio. Swift’s way of portraying the song is different than some. She states that song is to represent the empathy Katniss feels toward Prim, Rue, and Peeta in different parts of The Hunger Games story.

"“The Civil Wars had a show that night in L.A., so they raced right over to T Bone’s house. There’s so many things he could’ve done production-wise to make that song bigger sonically than it is, but I think that would have possibly been a mistake. For him to have left the song as a lullaby is brilliant.” – Taylor Swift"

Since it’s release, the track has continued to be successful and played by several aspiring artists on competitions like The Voice and American Idol. Needless to say, it’s a timeless classic that will forever go down in history as one of the greatest songs in Swift history. It’s simple, chilling and raw all at once, making for a great song.
