Syd

Syd was great, y’all. I loved them for a lot of reasons, starting with how absolutely awkward they were. I loved that a character with neopronouns was the first real love interest that Elena got, because of course Elena wouldn’t be transphobic, being herself.

I’m not sure I would have used the term girlfriend for Syd, since they don’t use feminine pronouns, but they weren’t shy about correcting people for getting things wrong, so I guess it was the right decision for the show.

Syd loves all the things that Elena does, but also has their own interests, and I was glad to see that. I loved the lockdown episode, because Syd wasn’t afraid to show that Elena had hurt their feelings by being incredibly awkward and trying too hard. If I had been in Syd’s place, I would have done the same thing they did in that situation, minus the standing on the balcony during a police lockdown. I’d like to keep myself alive, thank you very much. (Plus, that kiss was really, really cute.)

I loved that Syd also got along really well with Alex, which is something that’s vital for a relationship. You can’t have a good relationship without getting along with your significant others’ important people. I also loved that Syd was just as much of an activist as Elena. I think their relationship is one that a lot of queer folks will find hopeful.

Plus Syd was really adorable. I can’t wait to see where their relationship with Elena goes, and hopefully to get a little more in depth with their character in the next season. Even if it doesn’t work out, I think this relationship is incredibly important, and I hope it doesn’t end in a harmful way.
